Public Works Department: Recycling Regulations

Please visit our main Department of Public Works page for additional information, including regular & holiday garbage pick-up schedules

Branches & Loose Brush

Branches no larger than 6" in diameter must be tied in bundles 4 ft. long and not more than 50 pounds. They should be picked up within the week barring unforeseen circumstances. Branches can be taken to the Atlantic Avenue Site, untied, daily from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM and on Saturday, 9:00 AM to Noon. No tree stumps or trunks will be accepted!

Leaves

Leaves can be bagged all year around. However, during November/December and April/May you can place leaves loosely at the curb. Placing leaves or any trash on drains will not expedite pick-up. It will only cause flooding when it rains. Do not mix leaves and branches together since different methods of pickup and disposal are used.

Grass Clippings

Grass clippings will not be accepted. Suggestions to get rid of grass: compost pile, clip and leave, or if new mower is needed purchase one that will mulch as cutting.

Hazardous Waste

This can be done by appointment only. Call (732)922-2234, the Monmouth County Permanent Household Hazardous Waste Facility. They will set up an appointment and give you a location.

Oil-Based Paint

Oil based paint is considered a hazardous waste. Contact the County Waste Facility for an appointment (732)922-2234. They will also accept Latex Paint.

Water-Based Paint Cans

Water based paint cans must be emptied and washed with lids left off and placed at curb for pickup. Leave separate from recyclables.

Newspaper

Newspapers should be cross-tied with twine. NO plastic bags or junk mail, only newspapers.

Bottles, Cans, and Plastic Containers

Co-mingle empty and clean bottles, cans and plastic containers with #1 and #2 on the bottom. Place in reusable containers not more than 32 gallons. Plastic bags are not recyclable. DO NOT place bottles and cans in plastic bags.

Bulk Trash

This is a service rendered each Wednesday, but if there is a holiday Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday bulk trash pick-up is cancelled. Bulky trash consists of furniture, appliances (remove doors on refrigerators), carpeting, hot water boilers, metal, etc. NO BUILDING MATERIALS! Maximum of eight items will be picked up.

REMEMBER...place trash, debris or recycling at curb after 6:00 PM the night before collection. Containers must be removed within 12 hours after pickup.  Need more information?  Call the Department of Public Works at 732-571-6520 during regular business hours.
