Long Branch Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the City of Long Branch Green Initiative, has announced the start of a new Electronics Recycling Program to begin on Earth Day, April 22, 2008. According to environmental sources, Electronic Waste is the fastest growing portion of OUf solid waste stream. Electronic Waste consists of discarded computers (CPU's), keyboards, mice, monitors, scanners, printers, cables, laptops, televisions, radios, telephones, and VCR'S. Discarded Electronic Waste presents problems for all life because there are toxins in all electronics. Improperly handling discarded electronics such as dismantling without proper controls or simply tossing the materials in the trash expose hazardous chemical compounds known to negatively affect human and environmental health. When released into the environment, the toxic components pose a threat today and tomorrow as well as for future generations. Toxins inside your electronics include: Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Nickel, and Zinc. Effective April 22, 2008, residents and businesses with identification may DROP OFF these items at our facility on Atlantic Ave. between Ludlow St. and Sixth Ave. for environmentally safe recycling. The facility is open Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 3:00pm and on Saturday from 9:00am to 1:00pm. An attendant is on site for assistance.
